Question:

"Hi, I'd like to install XP pro on a Dell T105 server. This OS is not supported by this equipment or by Dell. Does anyone have experience doing this? The box has no operating system on it yet. Thanks!"

Answer:

"We have done XP pro on systems that Dell didn't officially support.

"The issues are drivers for network, video and RAID systems.

"The network and video drivers for Server 2003 always work, and the RAID drivers are the hardest.

"For the RAIDs Dell is less than clear as to versions of hardware that you may have, but trial and error usually work. It works or it doesn't, so you'll know when you get the RAID working.

"Not always worth the XP solution as you are limited to 10 simultaneous connected users including the local log on, and there are some good deals on server 2003 that get you all the drivers, and more connected users..."

"Like it was stated before its trial and error. Most drivers should be available on the internet or Dell?s site. They may not support what you are doing but some of the drivers are there.

"A common problem is the XP Pro installer doesn?t know what type of RAID or hard drive controller (PERC card) is in the server. To fix this get the RAID controller drivers from Dell or Dell's support site if available, expand then and put on a floppy disk, Then during the beginning of the install it says searching for three party drivers and to hit F6 to supply them. Press F6 and point to the floppy disk.

"If that doesn?t work you may want to run without any RAID."
