Brisbane's Fotofast made Father's Day gifts the priority on its website last month.

Sky’s the limit for photo gifts

Special Feature: Photo gifts

Australians are not only taking more pictures with more cameras, they are also using more custom photo products as gifts.

According to the PMA 2008 Australian Consumer Digital Imaging Survey, while 46% of households use custom photo products they made for personal or family use, 56% use them as a gift for the family or for friends.

The products in question include photo books, calendars, collages, posters and canvas prints.

The popularity of photo products as gifts is particularly high among households with young children with 69% of respondents saying that gave photo prints to family and 44% gifting prints to friends.

The survey underlined the potential for increased sales of photo cards with only 16% of households purchasing any type of photo card, including those for birthdays, holidays, thank yous, invitations and personalised greetings.

In terms of the percentage of households that made or ordered custom photo products, there is enormous potential across all demographic groups with only 17% of households getting into custom photo products and gifts (see chart below).
