Sony has put an end to the rumours (including those generated by its own marketing team) with the simultaneous worldwide release of its first ultra-compact, interchangeable lens system digital cameras.
The new Alpha branded cameras – the NEX-3 and NEX-5 – were formally unveiled in Sydney earlier today with the claim of having the world’s smallest and lightest interchangeable lens digital camera body.
Sony senior product specialist (digital imaging technology communications group) Nick Villani told PIN Online that the new category cameras were aimed at enthusiasts who wanted to upgrade from a compact to achieve DSLR quality images and professionals looking for a quality “back up” camera.
Villani said Sony had carried out focus group research in most major markets (including Australia) as part of the development of the camera, which it hopes will appeal to all levels of users, from “novice photo enthusiasts to seasoned professionals.”
One feature which will get special promotional attention is a “unique” 3D panoramic mode that captures high quality 3D panoramic photos which can be viewed on Sony’s BRAVIA 3D TV.
The 3D function, which will be available through a firmware update later this year, utilises a sweep panorama mode, based on the same technology used in existing Cyber-shot TX series models along with Multi Picture Format (MPF) storage.
The cameras also feature new 14.2 megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS image sensor and Full HD 1080i videos in AVCHD or MP4 format.
Both models weigh 229g and measure 24.3mm thick.
A new graphic user interface features six clearly labelled icons that can be selected by rotating and then pressing the control wheel to access shoot settings.
“With their user-friendly settings, such as background defocus control and intelligent auto mode, they allow amateur photographers to effortlessly capture the highest quality photos. For experienced photographers, these stylish, lightweight and compact cameras offer serious DSLR performance in a camera that can easily be carried around, anywhere and at any time.” Sony Australia product manager – cameras, Maurice Satya said.
