Sony has released two new interchangeable lens models in its Alpha range with claims that they are the fastest DSLR cameras in their class.
In a simultaneous worldwide release this afternoon, Sony said the “super fast” a55 and a33 incorporate a new optical system called Translucent Mirror Technology, which delivers uninterrupted auto focusing and a significant reduction in camera body size.
By replacing the conventional DSLR mirror box with one that contains a fixed translucent mirror, the a55 and a33 offer full-time, TTL phase-detection auto-focusing during live view, movie shooting and high speed continuous shooting.
As with most of Sony's newest cameras, the a55 and a33 feature the 3D Sweep Panorama mode. Both cameras are fairly compact for DSLRs, with the a55 weighing 441g with the a33 slightly lighter.
Both cameras feature a Sony A-mount for full compatibility with Alpha and KonicaMinolta lenses, a BIONZ image processor, and 3.0-inch tilt LCD screen.
The a33 and a55 cameras confirm Sony’s commitment to the DSLR category. Some observers believed the company was holding off on further development of the Alpha range in favour of the two new interchangeable lens models – the NEX-5 and NEX-3.
As reported last week, the NEX-5 was recently judged the best system camera in the EISA Awards.
