Sony simulates 3D in new Cyber-shot range

Sony has added ‘3D capability’ to its Cyber-shot digital still camera range with the introduction of the Cyber-shot DSC-TX9 and DSC-WX5 cameras.

The TX9 and WX5 are claimed to be the world’s first compact digital still cameras able to capture panoramic photos in 3D in a single lens system.

The 3D models only have one lens but using a feature called ‘Sweep Panorama’ mode, the camera stitches together many individual pictures to create one panoramic photo and creates the 3D illusion.

The pictures can be viewed (using those special glasses) on a compatible 3D TV via a HDMI connection.

Australian pricing and availability of the new Cyber-shot cameras have yet to be confirmed.

In Japan, the WX5 will sell for about 35,000 yen (US$396) and the slimmer TX9 for 45,000 yen (US$510).
