Aussie Framer wins International Award

What do the Alamo, a horse, an Australian bird, and Cambodian temple rubbings have in common?

They all were winning framed pieces in the recent International Framing Competition held by the Professional Picture Framers Association (PPFA) on Feb. 21.

Dean Cardenas' award-winning entry

In the OPEN category – in which participants can frame anything, indulging their creativity without restriction – Dean Cardenas, Art Incorporated, San Antonio, Texas, took home First Place for a framed poster of the Alamo.

“The objective was to take off on the Spanish design elements of the Alamo mission,” Cardenas says. “The ribbon on the liner shows off the festive element of the poster celebrating the yearly Fiesta event.”

Kristen Ling, CPF, A Framer’s Touch, Forest Grove, Ore., took Second Place with a framed whimsical serigraph by artist Rita Orr; and Trevor and Jenny Yates, Just Frame It, Gladstone, Queensland, Australia, took Third Place and Popular Choice with “Rebirth,” a framed image of a Yellow Eastern Robin, a native bird from forests devastated by Australian bushfires in 2009.

“They say a picture tells a thousand words,” Trevor Yates said. “Our job as framers is to present and preserve those images in the best possible way we can.”

Joyce Michels, MCPF, Michels Frames & Things, Saint Robert, Mo., took First Honourable Mention with a framed cut leather design from temple rubbings at Angkor Watt in Cambodia.

The Color Wheel Inc., McLean, Va., took High Point First Time Entry; the team was comprised of Jacinta Porto, CPF; Cyndi Geyer; Katy Lewis; Megan Miller; Steve Jacobs; Hernan Picco; and Victor Suarez.

PPFA hosts a searchable international database of custom framers – including Certified Picture Framers (CPF) and Master Certified Picture Framers (MCPF) – at www.findapictureframer.com, where consumers can also enjoy articles about framing artwork, family treasures, children’s art, and memorabilia.
