Canon's first outdoors model, the Powershot D10 competes with the Olympus Tough range and the new Panasonic Lumix FT-1.

Canon freshens up compact range

Canon has made an early announcement of new digital compact models which will be released in Australia from next month through to May.

Pricing details have not accompanied the announcements.

New models are:

PowerShot D10: Canon's first waterproof camera. It is waterproof to depths of up to 10 metres, shockproof to a height of 1.22m, has a 12 megapixel sensor and a 3x zoom lens. Release scheduled for May.

PowerShot SX200 IS "superzoom": It has a 28mm wide-angle, 12x optical zoom lens and a 12-megapixel sensor built into a small, lightweight body. Release scheduled for April.

Ixus 990 IS:  The top-of-the-line Ixus model features a 5x zoom lens, a 12 megapixel sensor. Release scheduled for April.

Ixus 110 IS: A 28mm wide-angle, 4x zoom lens, 12-megapxel sensor and the capability to record video in 1280 x 720 High Definition format . Images and video can also be captured in a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Available in gold, silver, pink and blue. Release scheduled for March.

Ixus 100 IS: The slimmest of the Ixus cameras, the 100 IS comes in black, silver, gold and red, features 1280 x 720 movie recording, and has a 12 megapixel sensor and 3x zoom lens. Release scheduled for March.

Ixus 95 IS: A 10- megapixel sensor and 3x zoom. Available in lime green, hot pink, aqua blue, steel grey and silver. Release scheduled for March.
